The Oatmeal Series continues with this grandmother recipe, and you know I love both oatmeal and recipes from a Nana, Grammy, Grandma, Abuela, Bubby, or any other grandmotherly type!

1 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup regular sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup shortening (This proves the recipe’s Grandmother authenticity! Feel free to swap in butter or vegetable oil if you were born after the 1950s)
1 egg
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup dry oatmeal (“quick” kind)

Cream sugars and shortening (or butter, etc.). Add egg and vanilla and beat well.
Sift flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda together and add to creamed mixture.
Stir in oatmeal.
Chill dough in refrigerator for at least one hour or overnight if possible.
Form dough into small balls and dip top in a little sugar. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 375 for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.
